David Hyde and his wife Julie were entertaining guests at their Dudley Park Lane home when their dog alerted them were alerted to an intrusion.
The pair went to investigate and discovered their belongings had been rifled through.
‘‘Fortunately we did what everyone does, had a quick look around, said we’d been robbed and ran outside to see if we could see anyone, not thinking the offender was still in the bedroom,’’ he said yesterday.
‘‘I was the unlucky one that went back into the house just to see what he’d taken.
‘‘I walked into a dark bedroom and it went from there.’’
Mr Hyde, 51, received multiple stab wounds to his face and neck during a short struggle with the offender and was airlifted to The Alfred hospital in Melbourne.
He was released on Wednesday.

Mr Hyde said the thought someone could simply walk into their home was terrifying.
‘‘He entered into the house and he was only one room away from where we were, in visual contact, robbing us while we were sitting there watching the football,’’ he said.
‘‘He was only metres away from where we were.
‘‘It’s pretty upsetting to know that Cobram’s a real tight-knit little community and you can’t even have people over .
He urged anyone with information about the attack to contact police.
‘‘Someone out there must know this chap, there’s got to be friends or family, people out there that know him and we need you to put your hand up,’’ he said.
‘‘This person, came not only to steal, he came to get out of there any way he could and I was lucky enough that I could defend myself to a degree.
