Challenging new role for students
St George’s Rd Primary School inducted 12 new school leaders and captains on Friday last week with Greater Shepparton City Council Mayor Jenny Houlihan awarding the honours.
By John LewisGreater Shepparton City Council Mayor Jenny Houlihan said she empathised with the school leaders who had stepped up to the plate by asking fellow students to vote for them.
‘‘I know what it feels like to be voted for, too,’’ Cr Houlihan said.
‘‘You go around the whole of Shepparton and ask people for their vote—but you never know if they will,’’ she said.
New school captains this year are Lucas Foenander, 11, from Shepparton and Courtney Voumard, 12, from Kialla.
Lucas said he was looking forward to laying a wreath at the Shepparton Cenotaph during ANZAC Day commemorations.
Courtney said her favourite subjects were music, physical education and maths.
She said she loved St George’s Rd because ‘‘everyone is so friendly’’.
Both students have attended the school since Prep.
Principal Kerri Souter said the school celebrated the diversity of culture in Shepparton and beyond.
‘‘Our school is a microcosm of Shepparton, Victoria and Australia,’’ Ms Souter said.
‘‘We are trying to create good citizens who will become role models in the future of our country.’’
