Nagambie police Sergeant Graeme Callaghan said police used stop sticks at several locations, but were unable to stop the car before it reached Melbourne.
Sgt Callaghan said a police helicopter was also called to track the vehicle.
He said police called off the pursuit about 8.30
‘‘Because of the dangerous speeds and the highly populated area, police did not follow the vehicle into the metro area,’’ Sgt Callaghan said.
He said police were making inquiries about the car’s owner.
