Car clocked at 200km/h on Hume

A car was clocked speeding at about 200km/h along Hume Fwy yesterday morning.

February 20, 2014 6:39am

Police received reports of a black Chrysler sedan travelling south along the freeway, near Benalla, at excessive speeds about 7.45am.

Nagambie police Sergeant Graeme Callaghan said police used stop sticks at several locations, but were unable to stop the car before it reached Melbourne.

Sgt Callaghan said a police helicopter was also called to track the vehicle.

He said police called off the pursuit about 8.30am when the car entered Melbourne.

‘‘Because of the dangerous speeds and the highly populated area, police did not follow the vehicle into the metro area,’’ Sgt Callaghan said.

He said police were making inquiries about the car’s owner.
