Former surf journalist turned children’s author David Craig Green filled classrooms at Gowrie St Primary School with fun and laughter last week.By Rhiannon Gavalakis
Mr Green has travelled the globe as a journalist and written about shark attacks, the Bali bombings and profiled 11-time world champion Kelly Slater.
Students from all year levels attended his interactive show as he read passages from his Erasmus James fantasy trilogy and shared writing tips.
‘‘They were so enthusiastic and it’s so much fun, I really enjoy doing the shows — it’s such a good feeling,’’ Mr Green said.
‘‘We worked with all their ideas and hopefully they’ll write some fantastic stories.
‘‘You never know, the next J.K. Rowling may come from there.’’
The award-winning fiction and non-fiction writer has penned more than 2000 articles for magazines and newspapers across the world.
Teacher’s assistant Tracy Bathman said the school visit was a great way to get students’ imaginations working.
‘‘It was a really great way to get them interested in different writing techniques and ways of writing,’’ she said.
‘‘It helped them realise that it can be funny.’’
Prep student Lincoln Trinder, 6, said he enjoyed meeting Mr Green.
‘‘I told him about the book I made, I drew the pictures and I made it all by myself,’’ Lincoln said.
Year 2 student Jacob Lines, 7, said the show was funny and helped him use his imagination.
Mr Green has six published children’s books and his new book Monster School will be available in book stores in October.
