Australia Day celebrations in the region

Australia Day celebrations will be held across the Goulburn and Murray valleys today. Here is a list of council-run events for the region.

Benalla

Celebrations at the Lake Benalla Foreshore, Civic Centre start at 8am with a flag-raising ceremony. The Benalla Rotary Club will provide breakfast for $7 per person. At 9am the presentation to the Benalla Achiever of the Year will be made followed by the announcement of the window dressing and children’s colouring competition winners.

Benalla Rural City Australia Day award presentations will be made at 11.30am at BPACC. Guest speaker is Tristan Miller, Australia’s newest ‘‘Marathon Man’’, and there will be entertainment and a light lunch.

Cooinda Village

A flag raising ceremony will be held at 10.15am with guest speaker Rex Nankervis and a poetry reading by Kath O’Hara.

BPACC

Benalla Rural City Australia Day award presentations will be made at 11.30am. Guest speaker is Tristan Miller Australia’s newest Marathon Man and there will be entertainment and a light lunch.

Alkoomi

At 3pm there will be a flag-raising ceremony with guest speaker Rex Nankervis and poetry reading by Kath O’Hara.

Australia Day movie

At 2.30pm Crackerjack will be showing at the BPACC Cinema, Samaria Rd, Benalla, and from 2pm to 6pm there will be a free pool party at the Benalla Aquatic Centre, Mair St, Benalla.

Thoona

Celebrations will be held at Thoona Memorial Hall with a community breakfast at 8am. A 9am flag-raising ceremony will be followed by guest speaker Gordon Glenn, a filmmaker and documentary producer, and presentation to the Thoona Achiever of the Year.

Baddaginnie

Celebrations will be at the Baddaginnie fire shed from 8am with a community breakfast.

Devenish

A flag-raising ceremony will start at Bicentennial Park at 9am. Guest speaker is Keith Lidgerwood followed by a presentation to the Devenish Achiever of the Year and morning tea.

Goorambat

Breakfast will be served at 8am at the Recreation Reserve, Trewin Rd. At 9am there will be a flag-raising ceremony followed by a presentation to the Goorambat Achiever of the Year.

Lima

9.30am at the Lima School Community Centre.

Molyullah

8am, community breakfast at Molyullah Hall.

Tatong

8am, community breakfast at Tatong Recreation Reserve.

Katamatite

Celebrations will be held in the Police Paddocks, corner Foy and Beek Sts. There will be a free barbecue breakfast and formalities start at 7am.

Numurkah

Celebrations will be held in Newman Square, corner Melville and Quinn Sts. There will be a free barbecue breakfast from 7.30am, with formalities beginning at 8am.

Barmah

Celebrations will be held at the Jack Edwards Reserve, Evans St. There will be a free barbecue breakfast with formalities beginning at 8am. Australian face painting will be available.

Cobram

Celebrations begin at 10.30am at the Civic Centre, Punt Rd. State Member for Murray Valley Tim McCurdy and Australia Day ambassador Maree Caldow will speak. There will be a free sausage sizzle and drinks. Entertainment by Nikki Goldsworthy and the Cobram Pipe Band.

Nathalia

Celebrations will be held at Nathalia Recreation Reserve from 6pm. There will be a barbecue, bowling at wicket, putting competition, balloon races and static display. State Member for Rodney Paul Weller and Moira Shire 2011 Australia Day Citizen of the Year Lyn Loger will speak.

Seymour

Australia Day celebrations in Seymour will be held at Ken Hall Pavilion within Kings Park, and will run from 9.30am to 11.30am. There will be a flag-raising ceremony and address by Australia Day ambassador Cameron Caine. This will be followed with an award presentation and morning tea.

Arcadia

Arcadia Australia Day celebrations will be at the Arcadia Community Hall from 8.30am. There will be a free breakfast, flag-raising ceremony, keynote address by Australia Day ambassador Claude Lombard, award presentations and children’s activities.

Dookie

Australia Day celebrations will be in the Country Women’s Association park from 8am. There will be a free sausage sizzle breakfast, flag-raising, Australia Day award ceremony, guest speaker and children’s activities.

Mooroopna

The Mooroopna Australia Day celebrations will be held in Ferrari Park from 10.30am. There will be flag-raising and affirmation ceremonies, bush verse, guest speakers including Australia Day ambassador Dr Hugh Wirth AM, Australia Day and children’s award presentations followed by a free barbecue and a chance to view a display of vintage motor vehicles.

Murchison

Australia Day celebrations will be held at Murchison River Bank Gardens from 8am. There will be a free barbecue breakfast, flag-raising ceremony, guest speakers including Australia Day ambassador Susan Alberti, presentations of children’s, Australia Day and community awards, followed by the annual duck race.

Shepparton

The Shepparton Australia Day celebrations will be in Queen’s Gardens from 9.30am. The flag-raising ceremony will be followed by an address by Australia Day ambassador Tony Schiavello, presentation of awards, citizenship ceremony, entertainment and free barbecue lunch.

Tatura

Australia Day celebrations will be at the Italian Social Club Rooms from 8.30am. A free barbecue breakfast will be followed by flag-raising and affirmation ceremonies, Australia Day awards, guest speakers, community awards and morning tea.

Toolamba

Australia Day celebrations will be at the Toolamba Recreation Reserve from 11am. A flag-raising ceremony will be followed by the national anthem, Australia Day awards presentations, guest speaker, fire brigade presentations and free barbecue lunch.

Violet Town

Celebrations kick off at 7.30am in Cowslip St. There will be a free cooked breakfast and entertainment followed by an address by Australia Day ambassador and Make-a-Wish Foundation chief executive Victoria Funnell. The shire-wide awards will also be presented.

Avenel

Celebrations from 9.30am at Jubilee Park. Australia Day ambassador Nigel Dick will host the award presentations and local historian Len Underwood will speak. Light refreshments provided.

Strathbogie

Celebrations start at 9.30am in the Strathbogie Memorial Hall. There will be a flag-raising ceremony, national anthem, address by Australia Day ambassador Bob Falconer, award presentation and affirmation ceremony.

Euroa

Celebrations start at 11.30am at RSL Memorial Park. There will be a flag-raising ceremony, national anthem, affirmation ceremony and local award presentation. Australia Day ambassador Bob Falconer will speak.

Nagambie

A best Aussie attire competition will be a highlight. From 5pm to 7pm there will be a family dance with the Belly Regan Bush Band, award presentation and sausage sizzle.

Longwood

Celebrations start at 6pm at the Longwood Recreation Reserve and Community Centre with a free barbecue. There will be a flag-raising ceremony, national anthem, affirmation ceremony, Matt Fowles of Plunkett Fowles Winery will speak, and local awards will be presented.

Cohuna from 7.30am.

Location: Garden Park, Cohuna

The morning will consist of breakfast, a flag raising ceremony, awards presentation and guest speaker Rodney Fehring.

Echuca from 8am.

Location: Aquatic Reserve, Heygarth St

The morning will consist of musical entertainment, a citizenship ceremony, award presentation, barbecue breakfast and guest speaker George Ermer.

Girgarre from 9am

Location: Girgarre Reserve, Winter Rd

The morning will consist of a flag raising ceremony and guest speaker Peter Sullivan.

From 9.30am

Location: Girgarre Memorial Hall, Morgan Crescent

The morning will consist of music and a barbecue breakfast.

Gunbower from 7.30am

Location: Angling Club jetty, Gunbower Recreation Reserve, Gunbower Island Rd

The morning will consist of a barbecue breakfast.

From 10am

Location: Gunbower Soldiers Memorial Hall, Murray Valley Hwy.

The morning will consist of a flag raising ceremony, morning tea and guest speaker.

Koyuga from 6pm

Location: Koyuga Hall

The evening will consist of a free sausage sizzle, games for the family, yabby races and a flag raising ceremony.

From 7.30pm

Location: O’Dae Rd

Lockington from 8.30am

Location: Lions/Apex Park, Lockington Rd

The morning will consist of breakfast, a 10am flag raising ceremony and guest speaker Laura Anderson.

From 1pm

Location: Lockington Channel, Singer Rd

The afternoon will consist of a kids fishing competition.

Mathoura from 7.45am, with the official ceremony beginning at 8.45am

Location: Mathoura Visitor and Business Centre lawns

The morning will consist of a barbecue breakfast, musical entertainment, giveaways, children’s activities and guest speaker Jihad Dib.

Milloo from 7pm

Location: Milloo Hall, Milloo Hall Rd

The evening will consist of dinner and a guest speaker.

Rochester from 7.30am

Location: Rochester Lions Park, corner Echuca Rd and Elizabeth St

The morning will consist of a barbecue breakfast, a vintage car and motorbike display and guest speaker Don Abell.

From 9.30am

Location: RSL Gardens, Victoria St

The morning will consist of a flag raising ceremony.

From 6.30pm

Location: Rochester Bowls Club, Victoria St

The evening will consist of a dinner, award presentations and guest speaker Ken Sharpe.

Tongala from 11.30am

Location: Soundshell, Mangan St

The morning will consist of a flag raising ceremony.

From 11.45am

Location: Tongala Public Hall, Mangan St

The morning will consist of an awards presentation, festivities a barbecue lunch and guest speaker Glenn James OAM.

Wyuna from 7pm

Location: Wyuna Memorial Hall, Alfred Rd

The evening will consist of a flag raising ceremony, barbecue dinner and a guest speaker.

Tocumwal from 9am at the Tocumwal Recreation Reserve. Celebrations will begin with an informal breakfast provided by the Tocumwal Football and Netball Club and Rotary for a gold coin donation at 7.45am. Citizens of the year announcements will be made.

Keynote speakers will include winner of Berrigan Shire Citizen of the Year Award, Norm Watt.

 

Jerilderie at Luke Park from 6.30pm until 11.30pm.

A fireworks display over the lake at 9.30pm will be a highlight of the evening.

The 2012 Australia Day Awards will be presented

The Lions Club will be holding a barbeque from with soft drinks available.

Bring along your chairs, picnic rugs and drinks and celebrate being Australian.

Deniliquin

Celebrations begin at the Mathoura Visitor and Business Centre lawns at 7.45am with a free big barbecue breakfast, musical entertainment, Australia Day give-aways, a jumping castle and face painting for the kids.

The official ceremony will begin about 8.45am, and will include the presentation of Australia Day awards and the cutting of the Australia Day cake.

Girgarre

9am, flag-raising ceremony and address by Australia Day Ambassador Peter Sullivan at Girgarre Reserve, Winter Rd; 9.30am, music and barbecue breakfast at Girgarre Memorial Hall, Morgan Cres.

Koyuga

6pm, free sausage sizzle, games for family and yabby races at Koyuga Hall; 7.30pm, Flag raising ceremony at O’Dea Rd.

Kyabram

7.30am, Australia Day breakfast, flag-raising ceremony, address by Australia Day Ambassador Matthew Christie and presentation of awards at Kyabram Memorial Gardens, Allan St. Bring along your chair or rug.

Kyvalley

Noon, barbecue lunch at Kyvalley Community Park and Pool, Scobie Rd; 1pm, flag-raising ceremony, guest speaker Peter Richards, fun and games with the pool open to the public.

Rushworth

5pm, sausage sizzle at Rushworth Shire Hall, High St; 6pm, talent quest; 7.30pm, presentation of awards.

Stanhope

9.30am, flag-raising ceremony at McEwan Place, entertainment at Community Hall. Address by Australia Day Ambassador Bill Horman and junior speaker plus morning tea.

Tongala

11.30am, flag-raising ceremony at Soundshell, Mangan St; 11.45am, presentation of awards, festivities, address by Australia Day Ambassador Glenn James and barbecue lunch at Tongala Public Hall, Mangan St.

Wyuna

7pm, flag-raising ceremony, barbecue tea and guest speaker at Wyuna Memorial Hall, Alfred Rd.
