Avenel reserves fairytale continues as they win another one for their coach.By Chalpat Sonti
‘‘A lot of us were pretty rooted at three-quarter time, but we just had to find that little bit extra. We all had JP written on the back of our hand and we looked at that before the start of the fourth and it gave us that bit of energy to push through,’’ Avenel reserves player Hank Woldhuis.
If that hasn’t convinced you how badly Avenel wanted to win the KDL reserves preliminary final at Girgarre on Saturday, just consider the do-or-die effort from Cal Williams.
With time running out on the clock and the Swans ahead by two points, opponents Murchison looked to get the ball out of its defensive 50. The Grasshoppers had shown all game an ability to run and spread and turn turnovers into points and here was another opportunity.
As the ball got to the edge of the 50, three Murchison players had the ball to themselves. Then Williams descended on them, tackled and harassed at least five times until reinforcements arrived.
The result was a ball-up, the ball eventually getting to Murchison’s other flank where a kick was sent forward. However, it was too shallow and went straight down the throat of a surprised Flynn O’Connor, who marked, sent the ball back in and Mark Cameron completed a remarkable couple of minutes by snapping a goal off balance to send the Swans wild — and into Saturday’s grand final against Undera.
Of course, Avenel have plenty to play for. Swans coach Joe Pollock faces a much bigger battle with illness than his side has on the field, and they know it. They’ve played with an extraordinary passion in the past two weeks.
