Former Sydney Swan to bolster Lions midfield after recruiting coup.By Chalpat Sonti
Seymour’s 2014 GVFL campaign has received a massive boost, with the signing of former Sydney Swan Brett Meredith for next season.
Meredith, 24, will fill an on ball/half back role and is part of player-coach Brent Colbert’s pledge to attract high-quality midfielders to the club.
The signing was confirmed last week and is a case of second time lucky, after the Lions approached Meredith last year. He attended a training session and liked what he saw, but wanted another crack at the AFL after being delisted by Sydney in 2012 following 16 AFL games, so went to VFL outfit Werribee instead.
However, he was impressed by the Goulburn Valley standard after watching a game between Mooroopna and Benalla this year, as well as the grounds, especially Kings Park.
The Mill Park native also knew Colbert’s brother Paul after following him through the Northern Knights TAC Cup side, being drafted by the Swans in 2007.
‘‘He and his brother are really good ‘fellas’ as well,’’ Meredith said.
‘‘I really wanted to play GV and spoke to a few other teams as well and was thinking ‘what should I do’.’’
