Seymour wins against Mansfield, but misses out on finals.By Chalpat Sonti
The cards didn’t fall its way after all, but Seymour’s senior football side did everything in its power to ensure they had the best chance of doing so at Mansfield on Saturday.
The Lions finished a season of ‘‘what-ifs’’ on the best possible note, thumping the Eagles by 70 points at a venue it has always found hard to win at, let alone by a margin.
But it was to no avail as the Swans thrashed cellar-dweller fellow Shepparton side Bears by 174 points to ensure it would finish sixth on percentage.
Yet there was plenty to remember, not the least Saad Saad’s nine goals, and the pitch invasion that followed the eighth, which brought up his fourth century in Goulburn Valley football (see separate story).
Paul Colbert, playing on one leg, still managed to kick five and there were plenty of others to shine.
Onballer Jason Cole continued his fine form, Shane Schottner was superb yet again in what hopefully isn’t his last game for the Lions, Gerard Liddell likewise even with a groin injury while Hugh Robertson and Harry Wheeler finished off seasons they should be happy with on a high.
It was also coach Shane Robertson’s last game in charge, and he was happy with the result.
‘‘It was a good win but there were mixed emotions as we knew what the Swans were doing and we struggled with the end result,’’ he said.
‘‘I was really proud of the way we went about it. I didn’t expect any more or less but for a dead rubber for the guys to come out and kick 26 goals, I thought they were enormous.’’
