Avenel ends season with loss to Stanhope.By Chalpat Sonti
It wasn’t the way Tim Muir would have liked to have gone out in his last game in charge of Avenel’s senior football side — but while a 134-point hammering might look bleak, the Swans mentor found a bright spot in the gloom.
A makeshift Avenel side, featuring six players who were backing up for their second game of the day — three each from reserves and under-18s — was competitive for the first quarter but were blown away thereafter.
That was in spite of a lion-hearted effort from midfielders Travis Muir, Andrew Green and Dean Fulco, who had to play virtually the whole game despite Green being troubled by a shoulder injury and Fulco cramping in the last quarter and having to call it a day. Cael McCarthy kicked four goals for Avenel, while wingman Ryan Lambert also stood out.
Tim Muir had reason to be happy with his charges.
‘‘Some of the efforts were pretty good considering,’’ he said.
‘‘It may sound strange but I was really proud of the way the guys battled on. I’ve had wins where I haven’t been as proud of them as on Saturday.’’
