Seymour's senior football skipper for 2014 announced at presentation night on Saturday.By Chalpat Sonti
Seymour has a new senior football captain to go with a change in coach for 2014.
Matt O’Keefe will take the helm at the Lions next season, a change announced by player-coach Brent Colbert at the club’s presentation night on Saturday.
As Colbert pointed out, O’Keefe is already one of the side’s leaders and the captaincy just formalises that.
Colbert also announced his coaching set up. Apart from Jeff Anderson, Glenn Cole will be the other senior assistant, while another club favourite in Adam Reid will be a part-time specialist coach.
Craig Zotti will be player development manager, looking after the younger players and those coming through the reserves.
‘‘It’s exciting, particularly when almost the entire playing group has committed to next year,’’ Colbert said.
He had been busy recruiting and expected to make some ‘‘big’’ announcements soon. Colbert also thanked outgoing coach Shane Robertson — who is to coach at Castlemaine — for his work this year.
‘‘The way I judge a coach is if he leaves the club a better place than when he got there and he’s done that.’’
Robertson said he was ‘‘employed to be the hard man’’.
‘‘Whether it worked or not, so be it,’’ he said.
‘‘The club wanted some changes, it wanted some hard nuts .
He said he believed the list was in good shape and he paid special tribute to Dylan and Rory Scopel who ‘‘as men have grown up enormously and are a good example of how young guys progress through the season’’.
Pre-season training will start again on November 7.
And it was fitting that the first winner of the Eamonn O’Connor Memorial Award, sponsored by aunt and uncle Maureen and Greg Liddell and presented by his dad Mick, was Jason Cole.
Cole overcame injury problems to display those qualities week after week, perhaps never more so than in that unforgettable emotion-charged game at Mooroopna a week after ‘‘Euwie’s’’ death.
He was also a fitting winner being, like Eamonn, from Mangalore.
