Patchy effort good enough to see Seymour home against Euroa.By Chalpat Sonti
It wasn’t always pretty — one quarter and a bit excepted — but Seymour got back on the winning track and kept its finals hopes alive with a 73-point thumping of Euroa on Saturday.
The win at the home of the old enemy owed much to a brilliant third term when the Lions went on a nine-goal rampage to blow the Magpies away.
That was set up with a six-goal-to-none second quarter which was more Seymour making the most of its chances and Euroa not doing so. A half-time spray from coach Shane Robertson was enough for the Lions to finally stop the Magpies’ dangerous spread which he had drummed into the side to do before the game.
However the side didn’t heed the three-quarter time message to focus on preserving a healthy percentage, which could be vital in the race for the last finals spot.
While the final margin might say differently, Seymour’s early lapses — it was lucky to be one point down at the first change after continually turning the ball over and other simple mistakes — would have been fatal against a better team and it also had its back six to thank.
But it was triumphant return for some of the Lions stars — Paul Colbert was at his sensational best at the contest and Shane Schottner made light of eight weeks away by playing all four quarters and dominating the ruck.
Both reported coming through the game well while skipper Brent Colbert admitted he would be better for the run but Robertson was happy enough with his game.
The only downside was a wrist injury to Robbie Douglas, which forced him to leave the field in the third quarter. He was unsure of its extent straight after the game.
Onballers Jason Cole and Brendan Liddell and defenders Matt and Tim O’Keefe were others to shine. Saad Saad kicked 10 goals, including his 700th for the club.
