Twenty-three nominations for the North East's biggest race of the year.By Chalpat Sonti
Sunday’s Seymour Cup might be sponsored by Darley, but it’s a promising gelding sired by a stallion based a little further up Northwood Rd that might hold the key to success.
There were 23 horses entered when nominations closed yesterday for the $150
The son of Swettenham Stud stallion Host, he has been paid up for a race at Caulfield today. However, should Eurell opt for Seymour he brings a runner that has been thereabouts in stakes company throughout his brief career and boasts a last-start fifth in the Shannon Stakes at Rosehill, following wins at the Sydney track and Sandown. Eurell’s Yea-bred Your Honour was probably the most impressive winner on Cup day last year, winning the race after the big one and since acquitting himself well in top Sydney company.
Hosting’s main opposition could be from Gai Waterhouse’s Spurtonic. The leading Sydney trainer produced Tribal Rock to run a good race in the Cup last year but this son of Flying Spur boasts a close last-start fourth in the Epsom Handicap. However, he is also entered in the Coongy Handicap at Caulfield on Saturday. Another entered in both races is stablemate The Great Snowman, third in the JRA Cup over 2040
The canny South Australian trainer Tony McEvoy has nominated Sysmo, a good third when resuming at Morphettville recently. Another leading trainer, Peter Moody, has entered Cosmic Causeway Soros and Miss Zenella, the latter runner-up in the Queensland Oaks in the winter but looking for the mile after a good first-up run at Caulfield recently. Soros is beautifully bred, being by Darley’s Lonhro out of the former Group One-winning mare Bonanova, herself bred in the purple. A former stablemate, the out-of-form import Voila Ici, has been entered by new trainer Shea Eden.
Darley has entered three prospects — Chasse, Proverb and Soledad — all trained by Peter Snowden.
None are in good recent form, though Proverb will have the tried-and-true Snowden method of switching states in an endeavour to get back on track.
Bill and Symon Wilde have the useful miler Lord Wimble nominated, while recent Bairnsdale Cup winner Road Trippin will be looking to take the next step up in class for Stephen Theodore.
Darley’s handy mare Benenden is likely to be hard to beat if she goes around in a supporting event, the $35
