Seymour Youth and Fitness Centre extension is a tribute to many visions.By Chalpat Sonti
Sergio Prado-Arnuero doesn’t do things by halves, and so it was when the Seymour Youth and Fitness Centre opened its new extension last week.
The SYFC president provided the highlight of the afternoon’s events with a passionate speech about the $100
Typical of Mr Prado-Arnuero’s drive and energy, he was already thinking about what was next to help fill the building as much as reflecting on its construction.
‘‘There’s still so much to do,’’ he said.
‘‘We want to put in 10 to 15 pieces of equipment, mats, a screen so we can project aerobics .
They’re all part of the battle to help society overcome what he called an epidemic of chronic diseases. But Mr Prado-Arnuero first thanked all those who had helped, dismissing any suggestion it was a one-man effort.
‘‘This is the work of a very strong team. All the members of the committee are amazing. They are all volunteers, every single member now and in the past .
As well as goods and labour. Mr Prado-Arnuero also thanked various politicians, including former Mitchell Shire councillor Robert Parker who has been one of the Centre’s strongest supporters, and the council for its co-operation.
‘‘I have no words to express our gratitude .
‘‘The extension is the expression of a dream, but not Sergio’s dream. It’s the dream of a strong community.’’
And as always it was important for disadvantaged members of that community — the Centre might be based in Seymour but it caters for residents in outlying towns such as Avenel, Mangalore, Nagambie, Broadford and down to Kilmore and Wallan — to have somewhere to go where they felt comfortable, Mr Prado-Arnuero said.
‘‘They need a place in which it doesn’t matter what the reality is, they are at home. It doesn’t matter they don’t have a functional family, they are very welcome (here) and at home.
‘‘I feel very proud being a member of this extraordinary community.’’
State Member for Seymour Cindy McLeish is one of Mr Prado-Arnuero’s many admirers, as she made plain at the opening.
‘‘The effort Sergio has put in for a long, long time in the face of many challenges .
‘‘Watching kids, train, people with different abilities, having them come here and seeing the smiles on their faces .
This isn't strictly anything to do with the Seymour Youth and Fitness centre extension opening but boxers Brad Weaire and Ben Harvie turn on a sparring session for the camera.
Some of the about 40 people who gathered for the extension opening, including Centre treasurer Carol Tullett (red top).
Mangalore's O'Connor family have been great supporters of the Centre, with committee member Eril here at the extesnion opening with husband Bill and twin sons Joe and Nic.
Seymour Youth and Fitness Centre preisdent Sergio Prado-Arnuero speaks at the opening of the extension, watched by State Member for Seymour Cindy McLeish and some young fans.
