Sunday is the day our region’s many thoroughbred stallions have been waiting for, and it showed a week out from the big event.
The major Northwood studs Darley and Swettenham held their annual stallion parades on Sunday, and the millions of dollars of horseflesh on show largely wanted to get down to business.
That has to wait until September 1, to ensure progeny born next year will qualify to have their second birthday at the start of the 2016-17 season.
But the crowd of at least 200 at both studs could also admire some magnificent examples of the breed.
Highlights included Darley’s homebred Helmet, who has let down into a magnificent specimen with a temperament to match, and Swettenham’s Melbourne Cup winner Americain, who will serve more than 140 mares in his debut Southern Hemisphere season.
