Crime rate decreases in Mitchell and Strathbogie shires
However, some categories show sharp increases.
Overall crime in Mitchell and Strathbogie shires fell last year, but it wasn’t across the board.
Figures released by Victoria Police last week showed 2932 offences recorded in the region in 2012, 20 0.7 per cent fewer than the previous year.
The fall was largely due to a 16.2 per cent decrease in crimes against property. There were increases in crimes against the person offences (23.6 per cent) while drug offences went up by 36.3 per cent and there was an 18.4 per cent rise in ‘‘other’’ crimes.
Burglaries from residential properties rose 32.5 per cent, to 163, while assaults jumped 26.7 per cent to 550. Thefts from motor vehicles were down 19.2 per cent to 147.
Mitchell Police Service Area Inspector Glenn Woolfe said the increase in burglaries had been from residential properties and buildings under construction, and a stratgey had been developed to deal with this.
Crimes against the person offences had seen increased reporting of family violence related assaults, ‘‘driven by our continued focus in this area and building confidence through support of victims to report these matters’’.
Police had also targeted heavy vehicles, drink drivers, speeding and hoon drivers and mobile phone users who, along with fatigued drivers, had been the prime causes of collisions.
