Neville and Helen Rushbrook celebrated 33 years of marriage at Aysons Reserve last week.By Elaine Cooney
When Neville Rushbrook first met Helen, he said he would marry her within six months — and he was off by a month.
The pair married seven months later and celebrated their 33rd wedding anniversary last week.
Neville never forgot his image of the busty blonde carrying a crate of beer out of a bottle shop in Tamworth and asked her friend Carol who the beautiful woman was.
It was love at first sight for Helen too, who was taken by his mop of curly black hair and piercing blue eyes.
Their wedding story is unconventional, to say the least.
‘‘I was out killing a cow with my father the day of the wedding,’’ Helen said.
Neville also chipped in, but it was Helen who had the abattoir skills.
She rushed back home, had a shower, fixed her hair and married the love of her life.
The couple, who were both truck drivers, decided to retire three years ago because they were not seeing enough of each other.
‘‘We travelled most of Australia, but never got to see it,’’ Neville said.
‘‘I said bugger it, I married her for a reason.’’
Helen bought a bus on eBay from a town near Darwin and told Neville they were going to convert it into a home and travel around the country.
That was three years ago and the pair said they did not regret their decision for a minute.
The couple was in Queensland when Helen discovered she had breast cancer.
Helen underwent surgery and is on the mend.
The couple came back to Rochester, where they used to live, to see Campaspe Medical Centre’s Dr Eji regularly.
‘‘The doctors here, especially Dr Eji, are the best in Australia,’’ she said.
