New bishop appointed

Former Vicar General of the Archdiocese of Melbourne, Les Tomlinson, has been announced as the seventh Bishop of Sandhurst.

The appointment, announced last Thursday, has been in the pipeline since the sudden death of the late Bishop Joe Grech, just over 12 months ago.

Bishop Tomlinson will be based at Bendigo’s Sacred Heart Cathedral, but will travel around to the diocese’s parishes including Rochester, Echuca, Heathcote and Kyabram.

Bishop Tomlinson said he was brought up in Mildura and no stranger to country life.

‘‘In reflecting on over almost 40 years of my priesthood, I believe that the richest and most fulfilling aspect of my ministry has been my work as a pastor,’’ he said.

‘‘I look forward to being bishop and pastor of the clergy and people of the Diocese of Sandhurst.

‘‘I am looking forward very much to the move to Bendigo, becoming part of the Church there and fulfilling my role of leadership as bishop, teacher and pastor of the Diocese of Sandhurst,’’ he said.

Bishop Tomlinson will be officially appointed to the role Archbishop Dennis Hart at Bendigo’s Sacred Heart Cathedral on March 1.
