Finals near for district bowlers

Some places are still to be determined in the Campaspe bowls association.

With just two rounds of pennant left to be played, interest will be keen as in division one, Moama and City of Echuca are certain finalists, occupying the top two positions respectively and seemingly miles above other teams on the points table.

Rich River lost to Mathoura and Tongala redeemed itself to defeat Ky Valley View and suddenly there was only 12 points between Rich River (third 117 points), Tongala (fourth 111) and Mathoura (fifth 105).

Deniliquin is just 10 points shy in sixth place.

In the two remaining games, Rich River plays Moama (home) and Deniliquin (away), Tongala meets Deniliquin (home) and Moama (away), while Mathoura does battle with City of Echuca (away) and Rochester (home), Deniliquin plays Tongala and Rich River in two tough encounters.

On Saturday, Rich River let its guard slip to Mathoura and lost by 11 shots, while Tongala accounted for Ky Valley View 110-78.

City of Echuca had only two rinks up in its 104-91 victory against Rochester, while top of the ladder Moama had a minor scare against Deniliquin, winning two rinks and a 114-91 victory.

Division two is in a similar position to division one as Moama (185 points) and City of Echuca (150) are certain finalists, with Deniliquin RSL winning a close game against Rich River to lie third on 145 points.

Fourth place is up for grabs as Rochester (89) is fourth, ahead of Elmore (88) and Rich River sixth on 80 points.

Deniliquin is seven points further astern.

Next week Rich River plays Moama, RSL plays City of Echuca and Rochester meets Lockington, while Deniliquin plays Elmore.

In round 12, Moama defeated Deniliquin 116-81, while City of Echuca overpowered Rochester 122-86.

Elmore defeated Lockington at home, 110-79.

The division three table is almost decided as City of Echuca (164 points) beat Rochester 90-56 to head the premiership ladder from Tongala (135), Moama (130) and Rich River (124).

Rochester is fifth on 86 points.

Tongala soundly beat Ky Valley View 112-46, while Rich River landed a close result against Deniliquin RSL, 67-62, and Moama had 18 shots to spare against Lockington.

The results in division four had the premiership table moving in different ways as Rich River Green defeated second-placed Mathoura 81-63 and jumped into the four, while Mathoura dropped to third behind Moama Red and City of Echuca, first and second respectively.

City of Echuca accounted for Rich River White which now fills fifth place on 104 points — 10 points shy of fourth place.

Moama Red defeated Rochester by 41 shots and Deniliquin beat Moama Teal in the other game.

Mathoura has a danger game on Saturday when it hosts Moama Red.

In division five, the final four is almost complete, but with Lockington (fifth) only 17 points from fourth place and a possible 24 points to be won, anything is possible.

The top four teams are Moama (117 points) followed by City of Echuca 102, Tongala 96 and Mathoura 92.

On Saturday, the top four sides won their respective games, albeit a couple of closer games than would have been forecast.

Moama defeated Lockington 47-42, City of Echuca beat Rich River 69-31, while Tongala had 11 shots to spare against Elmore 45-34 and Mathoura beat Deniliquin RSL 54-42.

On Sunday, the Bendigo-Campaspe regional state championships were decided at Rochester Bowling Club.

The CVBD representatives were well presented and featured in the winner’s circle on the day.

In the women’s section, Veronica Kelly (City of Echuca) was rewarded for her consistent bowling as she won the Champion of Champions singles against Pam Wheelhouse (Kangaroo Flat), then combined with teammate Melissa Larcombe to defeat Jean Cunningham and Carol McEwan (Bendigo Golf) in the state pairs.

Jill Grimshaw (Deniliquin) defeated Colleen Sutch (Kangaroo Flat) to progress to the state play-off in the state singles.

In the Champion of Champions pairs, Ina Heywood and Evelyn Locke (s) from Elmore accounted for Margaret Meade and Lee Harris (Golden Square).

The results in the men’s section saw Vern Rehe and Peter Nixon (s) from Moama defeat John Rooke and Ian Bayliss (Golden Square) in the state pairs.

The Champion of Champions singles will also be held, with Mark Chaplin (Moama) to play the Bendigo representative in the Bendigo-Campaspe regional final play-off.

The state pennant play-off for the Bendigo-Campaspe region will be held at Rich River Golf Club Resort on Saturday, March 24, starting at 1pm.

The next scheduled star event is the Ky Valley View gold watch fours event on Sunday, March 11, starting at 9.30am.
