District trainers taste success

Heats of the Decron Hoof Care Tontine Pacers Series were held at Horsham last Monday, with Elmore trainer Keith Cotchin on the winner’s list again with Cullen Bromac, which was driven by Jodi Quinlan.

Cullen Bromac (Christian Cullen/Classic Blue Jeans) is obviously enjoying life in Elmore and after working from gate four to assume control from the pole marker Next Dawn, scored easily in 1:58.2 from Next Dawn and Ezee Duzit Lombo (three back the markers).

Rochester trainer Mark Thompson landed the Nyah Village Caravan Park Pace for C0 class (mares) over 2170m with Grinfromeartoear/Toota Tango filly Melrose Kate.

Having her 15th start (six this season), Melrose Kate with Nathan Jack in the sulky was given a sweet passage trailing the local Lake Boga hope Nolagalile, before using the sprint lane to overtake and go on to win from Nolagalile.

Shes Got Presents was third after moving to race in the open at the bell, with the mile rate a leisurely 2:07.8.

Elmore’s Jenny Johnson snared the Dorrie Schmedje Trotters Handicap for T0 or better class over 2530m at Echuca on Thursday with five-year-old Wind Cries Maori/Le Memoir gelding Amiri, with Daryl Douglas in the sulky.

In what was a super performance, Amira came off a 30m handicap to gallop away and settled nine back along the markers, with neighbour Neville Welsh leading the field with Sarkava.

Gradually making ground to move into the running line but still last at the bell, Amira must have been six wide on the home turn, with 40m backmarker Jingling Silver inside him.

Sprouting wings on turning, Amiri motored to the wire to register a 5.4m victory in 2:09.8 from Jingling Silver and the rank outsider Bestinsight, who is also trained in Elmore.

Perhaps the most elated people on course were Bamawm owners Allan and Pam Pollock, when their lightly raced seven-year-old Embrace Me/Aussie Benefit gelding Brougham greeted the judge in the Choice Hotels Pace for C0 class over 1755m, giving Daryl Douglas a treble for the night.

Trained by Allan, Brougham led throughout from gate four, kicking right away approaching the home turn to score by 5.8m in 2:04.6 from Ciara Girl, with a death-seating Efficient battling away for third.

Allan will be remembered as having a smart horse by the name of Go Scotch in the 1980s when training at Cohuna.
