Disappointing day on the greens

On Saturday, all four Rochester pennant teams lost their matches, making it difficult for any division to make the finals.

Division one played at Echuca and, after leading by the 70th end, finished up going down by 13 shots.

Terry Sharkey’s team won by one shot, after a tight battle all day, after dropping a six on end 16.

It was Sharkey’s first game after an injury kept him out for more than two months.

Les Walles’ team had a good six-shot win, despite dropping seven shots over the last four ends.

Kevin Brennan’s team held a dominant position and at one stage led 15 shots to one.

The damage was done on end 18 where they dropped a five to surrender the lead for the balance of the game and to go down by four shots.

Don Gillies’ team were never in the picture, winning only nine ends all day to go down by 16 shots.

Division two played at home against Echuca and it was handed a bowling lesson, going down by 36 shots overall, despite Gerard Browne’s team winning by 23 shots.

Gerard Browne’s rink had a good day.

Under his skippership, all members of the team contributed towards the result, allowing the opposition to only win eight ends on the day.

Wayne Spooner had a battle all day and was one shot down at the break.

Echuca proceeded to score 19 shots to eight after the tea break to record an 11-shot win.

Anton Gusak’s team had an off day after many weeks of successive wins to only win nine ends to go down by 12 shots.

Ross Turner, with a totally new team, had a day to forget, winning only eight ends. They dropped three sixes and a five to go down by 36 shots.

At the end of round 12, Rochester 2 is clinging by the narrowest of margins to the four.

Rochester is one point ahead of Elmore and 10 points ahead of Rich River.

Rochester has a worse shot score of 78 down, compared to Elmore with -59.

Division three played at Echuca and was handed out a substantial loss of 54 shots.

Hedley Moon’s rink got within one shot, but the teams of Donald Thompson and John Coghill dropped 19 shots and 14 shots respectively.

Thompson’s team dropped a six and a five in the first four ends to set the pattern for the day.

Coghill’s team also dropped a six and a five to effectively put themselves behind for the day.

Moon’s team won the last five ends but fell short by one shot.

Division four played at home against Moama Red and suffered a loss by 41 shots.

Ian Smith was the only successful rink in the division, winning by seven shots, scoring 15 shots to seven after end 16.

Glyn Francis’ team only won seven ends on the day, to go down by 27 shots.

Rod Franklin only won eight ends, to go down by 21 shots.

During the week the final of the club B grade championship was played between Gavin Houlihan and Noel Sexton.

In a seesawing match, where the lead changed six times, the largest margin was four shots.

Houlihan led by one shot by the 23rd end, and went ahead to score three shots to Sexton’s one to seal the match.

The women’s division one team played at home against Ky Valley View and scored a magnificent win by 40 shots, winning two rinks in the process.

Marg Knight’s team scored a fabulous 30-shot win, followed by a great win by Marg Ferris’ teams by 14.

Division two travelled to Mathoura and had a sad day, losing all rinks to go down by 29 shots.

Division three played away against Rich River Blue and scored a win overall by nine shots.

Betty Kemp’s team had a great win over P Sehestedt’s team by 12 shots.

Shirley Nelson’s team just missed out on a win by three shots.

In other club events, there are still some matches which need to be played.

In the 100-up, Noel Sexton is scheduled to play Les Walles and, in the 21-up, John Hirst and Peter Stahl will face off.

Night pennant has started and more players are welcome. Come to the club and put your name down.
