Close battle for Rochester tennis sides
Rochester’s two section one teams were both involved in close battles in Echuca on Saturday as the Campaspe Tennis Association competition nears finals.
Rochester 1 travelled to Vic Park to take on Echuca Lawn without regular team members Jason McCurry, Todd Woodfine and Karl Hansen, but recruited Travis Johnson and Brian Leahy late to fill the gaps.
Luke Jilbert and Luke Holmfield continued to dominate the bounce of the ball against hard court player Johnson and Elliott Taylor.
Jacob Jilbert and Ian Sinnett had a four-game lead before Trav Lee and brother-in-law Leahy stepped up to win in a tie-break.
In the first women’s set, Deb Hodge and Megan Farrell did not get the chances to score more than four games against the amazing Karen Bartlett and Kate Lee.
Kathy Sinnett and Janine Ferrier were outplayed by Country Week teammates Karen Taylor and Leisa Evans 1-8, while Luke Holmfield and Ian Sinnett got the balls to bounce their way, winning 8-2 against Taylor and Leahy.
Hodge and Kathy Sinnett lost 4-8 against the consistent pair of Bartlett and Taylor, while Farrell and Ferrier had an amazingly long set, although the score did not reflect the end score with Kate Lee and Evans losing 4-8.
In the men’s singles, Luke Jilbert won against a frustrated Johnson 6-3, while Luke’s brother Jacob won 6-1 against Trav Lee.
Rochester 1 was two games down going into the mixed.
Johnson and Kate Lee were down 2-6 before making their shots count against Luke Jilbert and Farrell but eventually lost 6-8.
Holmfield and Hodge were on court the longest, winning some captivating rallies against Leahy and Taylor 8-4 with the score not representing the tennis played.
Jacob Jilbert and Ferrier lost 5-8 against Taylor and Bartlett, with Bartlett bringing her Country Week form home and not dropping a set for the day.
In the final set, Ian and Kathy Sinnett lost 5-8 against Travis Lee and Evans as Lawn held on to defeat Rochester 1 by six games, 7-78 to 6-72.
