Kyabram and District Health Services’ district nursing unit manager Robyn Busch is retiring after 33 years.
Kyabram and District Health Services said farewell to a popular staff member last week with the retirement of Robyn Busch.
Mrs Busch has worked in the district nursing unit for 33 years, 32 of those as unit manager, but when she started she had not planned to stay.
‘‘I was only intending to stay a year and knew nothing about district nursing,’’ she said.
‘‘It’s been a real challenge, but I’m very proud of what we’ve built up here.
‘‘I especially want to thank the district nurses and palliative care and breast care nurses for all their work.’’
One of the most noticeable changes she has seen over the years is how patients leave hospital earlier and, therefore, people district nurses visit at home are a lot sicker.
‘‘We see more chronic health problems and people needing more complex type care,’’ she said.
As well as working with a great team, Mrs Busch said she had really enjoyed the patient contact.
‘‘Helping people achieve their goals in rehabilitation and seeing them heal is wonderful, and I’ve gained a lot of satisfaction from supporting families in palliative care situations,’’ she said.
‘‘I’ve visited so many homes in and around Ky, different people can teach you so much about life, it’s been such a rewarding experience.’’
Mrs Busch said it had been hard to reach the decision to leave.
‘‘I’m at a point in my life where I need a bit more time to myself and to spend with family,’’ she said.
‘‘I’m really looking forward to spending time with my grandchildren and there’s a fourth on the way.
‘‘It will be good to get up in the morning and just think what shall I do today.’’
Long-time friend and colleague Loretta Lilford is stepping up into the unit manager position and Mrs Busch will still be seen around the hospital, as she has put her name down to be a casual relief nurse.
Speaking at Mrs Busch’s retirement gathering, KDHS chief executive Peter Abraham said she had been an institution with the health service and had performed a huge role in the district nursing unit.
‘‘You’ll be leaving a big hole to fill and everyone here is going to miss you,’’ he said.
