Local pyrotechnist Mr Skye Candy is putting on a display at 10
Kyabram Veterinary Clinic veterinarian Jessie Ward said many pet owners may not be aware their pets, particularly dogs, feared fireworks.
Ms Ward urged dog owners to be aware of their pet’s fear, and take care of them appropriately.
‘‘Make sure your dogs are well confined either in your backyard, but if they have managed to escape before, pop them inside for the evening,’’ Ms Ward said.
‘‘When the fireworks are going off, it’s not a bad idea to sit with them and keep them calm and let them know you’re around and just try and settle them down.’’
Ms Ward said if you are in doubt about what to do, speak to your local vet.
‘‘If you’re dog is absolutely terrified, and you know that it happens either with storms or with fireworks, you can come in and have a chat to us about different management techniques which could be in the form of sedatives.’’
Please note the fireworks display — which is expected to last about five minutes — is on at 10pm, not 8pm as advertised in Wednesday’s Free Press.
