Kyabram raids strike drugs blow

Police have made four arrests following the execution of drug warrants in Kyabram in the past four months. The latest arrest of a 41-year-old Kyabram man last week followed a raid on an Allan St address in which 13 large cannabis plants, plus two firearms and ammunition were seized.

Police seized 13 large cannabis plants, plus two firearms and ammunition from a Kyabram property last week.

Members of the Campaspe Tasking Unit executed a drug warrant at a residential address in Allan St about 9.35am on Tuesday, February 26.

Leading Senior Constable Corey Wild from Kyabram Police said the cannabis plants were found in the rear yard of the property.

‘‘A further search found two firearms, one of which has since been confirmed as stolen, a quantity of ammunition and other property which had been stolen,’’ he said.

‘‘A quantity of dried cannabis and cannabis seeds was also found.’’

The estimated street value of the drug seizure was $10000 and further investigations showed the property was secured at all times and had surveillance cameras active.

A 41-year-old Kyabram man was arrested and interviewed at Kyabram Police Station.

He has been charged with multiple offences including possession, use and cultivation of cannabis, possession of firearms and ammunition without a licence, and possession of the proceeds of crime in relation to the stolen items.

The man has been bailed to appear at Echuca Magistrates Court in April.

There have now been four arrests made following the execution of drug warrants in Kyabram in the past four months.

More than 230 cannabis plants, a haul believed to be the largest in the district for many years, were seized following the execution of search warrant at a property in Thompsons Lane last November.

A forty-one-year-old Kyabram man was arrested and charged with cultivating and possessing a commercial quantity of cannabis.

Two men were also arrested and charged with drug related offences on February 5 when search warrants were carried out on two Kyabram properties on the same morning.

Senior Sergeant Peter Wardell from Kyabram Police said he was pleased another quantity of drugs would not be reaching the streets.

Sen Sgt Wardell made it clear he wanted to reduce drug and alcohol issues in the community when he took on the position last July.

‘‘We’ve had good support with members of the local community assisting us with information and we’ve been able to increase the number of search warrants executed,’’ he said.

‘‘I’m keen to continue building on that and on the good working relationship we have with licensees.’’

The estimated street value of the 13 large cannabis plants seized in the rain was $10,000.

Two firearms were also seized in the raid on the Allan St property.
