Kyabram couple celebrates 60th anniversary
Kyabram couple Newt and June Tomasini have celebrated 60 years of marriage
By Neil SandersKyabram couple Newt and June Tomasini recently celebrated an impressive 60 years of marriage, but modestly insist that the milestone is ‘‘not really a big deal.’’
The two were married on what was a ‘‘terribly hot day’’ at the Stanhope Presbyterian Church on the 29th December, 1951.
Newt was born in Daylesford and moved to Stanhope with his family in 1943.
June was born at the Rushworth Hospital and resided in Stanhope since she was young.
Newt and June had lived ‘‘just up the road’’ from one another in Stanhope, but didn’t meet until Newt began picking up his mother’s orders at the local grocery store where June worked.
‘‘I found her interesting,’’ Newt said when asked his first impressions of June.
They moved to Kyabram in 1973, with Newt continuing to work on the family farm at Stanhope and June taking on a number of different jobs during her time here.
‘‘We used to go to dances back in those days too .
Newt and June have lived in their home in Kyabram ever since.
The couple say their best memories took place when raising their three children. They are proud grandparents to nine grandchildren.
Both attribute their successful marriage to their ongoing support for one another.
‘‘We don’t have arguments,’’ June said.
‘‘We’ve always worked together and looked after each other.’’
‘‘It’s just been easy,’’ Newt added.
June and Newt are ‘‘happy not to have any worries’’ these days, and enjoy spending time around home as well as going out for dinner occasionally. Newt also keeps himself occupied with bowls twice a week.
The couple celebrated the milestone with a lunch at the Kyabram Club with family and a few friends.
‘‘It was very nice,’’ Newt said.
