Three mates were joking that there would be a pearl in the last oyster at dinner recently - and then found one.By Barbara Sungaila
A chance find in a serve of oysters at Heathcote’s Commercial Hotel last Sunday night could see a run on the popular dish.
Mick Cann, Peter Eichhorn and Dave Stephens were having dinner when Mr Cann discovered a pearl in his Oysters Kilpatrick.
Mr Cann said he ordered a dozen oysters as an entrée.
‘‘I’d eaten 11 of them and missed one and was just about to send the plate back when Peter said ‘Oh, there’s still one left’,’’ Mr Cann said.
‘‘I said ‘how stupid of me,’ and he said ‘there’ll be a pearl in that one’.
‘‘I put it in my mouth and all of sudden I got this little round thing out of the oyster.
‘‘It’s small and round and about an eighth of an inch in diameter and it’s hard — and it’s not a tooth filling or anything like that.’’
Mr Eichhorn said the three men had been talking about pearls after Mr Cann ordered the oysters.
‘‘We were commenting about the saying ‘what a pearler’ and (how) we don’t hear that saying anymore,’’ he said.
Mr Stephens said the pearl had to have come out of the oyster.
‘‘Everything else was consumed with great gusto except this one oyster,’’ he said.
‘‘Mick was horrified he’d left an oyster for the rubbish man so he pounced on it.
‘‘Then the next thing – ding! And out comes a pearl, so it has to have come from the oyster.’’
Barman Robert ‘Dash’ Dashwood said the find created quite a lot of interest among the other patrons.
‘‘In my time in hotels, which probably goes back 20 years, I’ve never heard of anything like it,’’ he said.
‘‘It was a bit of a funny night.’’
