Traders get behind shop local message

Heathcote traders are hoping people will shop local this Christmas to help boost local businesses.

Heathcote traders are urging district residents to shop locally for Christmas presents.

Heathcote Newsagency’s Karen McKay said trading was not as good as past years.

‘‘There’s not as much foot traffic in the street and there’s not as many people spending money,’’ she said.

‘‘So they might come in, but the average sale is lower than it’s been in the past over Christmas.

‘‘Certainly, Christmas here, you wouldn’t say it’s taken off yet.

‘‘There’s been a bit of momentum... but it’s certainly not going hell for leather.’’

She said it was important for people to shop locally and support district businesses.

‘‘We’ve got such a great variety in town now.’’

Fashion on High’s Carol Owen also encouraged people to shop in High St.

‘‘We’re awesome people, very friendly,’’ she said.

‘‘We go out of our way to try and help people to get the right pressie.

‘‘And if we don’t support locals then the businesses close up — you need to support your locals.’’

She said it had been very quiet for Christmas trading.

‘‘We’re less than two weeks out and for me it may be the weather as (people aren’t thinking about summer clothes).’’

And Heathcote Sweets and Treats’ Jenny Allen echoed the views of other traders.

‘‘It’s been very quiet,’’ she said.
