Axedale will be one of four central Victorian towns to receive a new emergency service facility.By Barbara Sungaila
A new fire station for Axedale will be part of a $2.26 million boost for central Victorian emergency services.
Last Monday, Police and Emergency Services Minister Kim Wells said four new emergency service facilities would be built in Marong, Axedale, Murphy’s Creek and Baringhup West.
‘‘This is a major boost for emergency management capabilities in Central Victoria and will ensure residents are better protected during floods, storms and bushfires,’’ he said.
Mr Wells was at Marong to announce construction would now begin on the SES component of the co-located $1.2 million CFA-SES complex, where the CFA station is already complete.
Mr Wells said a new $530,000 fire station would be built in Axedale.
‘‘Construction will begin in November and the new station is due to be completed by February 2014,’’ he said.
Axedale Fire Brigade captain Peter Harkins said the news was very welcome.
‘‘It’s long overdue,’’ he said.
‘‘The new station will have a lot of facilities, including car parking and room for training, which will benefit members as well as the community.
‘‘This new fire station will see us for the next 40 years.’’
