Kangaroo settles in Heathcote driveway

Heathcote resident Michelle Chapman and her family had an unhappy visitor last week when a stressed kangaroo chose their driveway to lie in.

Mrs Chapman said they found the kangaroo in the driveway, near the entrance to the garage, looking tired and weak, so she contacted Heathcote Wildlife Shelter to see if it could help.

‘‘They were fantastic,’’ Mrs Chapman said.

‘‘The way they just picked it up and it put it in the car, I couldn’t believe it. Most of us would be too scared to go near it.’’

Mrs Chapman said it was possible the kangaroo had been hand-raised at some stage and released, because of the way it approached humans.

‘‘It wasn’t scared,’’ she said.

‘‘The way it approached people, a little feisty, and when the wildlife people picked it up, it didn’t try to kick or bite. It was very calm.’’
