The Heathcote Golf Club open gardens day is sure to be a crowd pleaser.By Barbara Sungaila
The Heathcote Golf Club open gardens day is on November 3.
It will feature three gardens — Peppercorn Cottage in Last St, Arraculeam in McMahon St and Jenni Bland in Wattle Drive.
Peppercorn Cottage boasts an extensive garden on the banks of the McIvor Creek.
Three large peppercorn trees are a feature of the site — the largest has a girth of six metres and a span of 29 metres.
Soft plantings in sweeping beds dominate and owner Thelma Johnson said she drew much of her inspiration from several overseas garden tours.
‘‘It is a beautiful area to live with the sound of the creek in the background,’’ she said.
‘‘We have hundreds of bulbs that pop up and make you realise spring is here and the bird life is superb.
‘‘We have seven different ornamental pear trees and nine mop top robinas under-planted with iceberg roses.
‘‘I love the English lavender and when ready to pick, sell bunches to help some charity organisations each year.
‘‘We have the hostel residents down for morning tea so they can enjoy the garden as well.’’
Mrs Johnson said this was the last time she and husband Ray would be opening the garden as they were now building a smaller house on an adjoining block.
‘‘We have started the garden up there, feel free to peep through the gate,’’ she said.
Jenni Bland moved into her property in September 2012.
She said the original owner had been a keen gardener and had done all of the hard work, improving the soil and forming garden beds and paths but the property had been rented out for some years so things were pretty overgrown.
‘‘Initially, my time was taken up with cutting back and removing dead plants and shrubs,’’ she said.
‘‘Gradually I’ve replanted, mostly with native(s)
‘‘Although small, the garden has been a challenge — I am impatient for things to grow.’’
Arraculeam is planted mainly with succulents and will be featured in more detail next week’s McIvor Times.
Tickets are available at all gardens and entry is $12 adults, $10 seniors and children under 16 free (must be accompanied by a adult).
Gardens will be open from 10am to 4pm.
A plant stall to inspire green fingers and Devonshire Tea to soothe the garden weary will be found at the golf clubhouse in Patterson St during the day.
