Frank Janner has delivered Meals on Wheels in Heathcote for 15 years.
The 85-year-old is one of 20 volunteers who distribute between 10 and 15 meals to Heathcote residents every weekday.
He said it was only an hour a week, which was a very small time commitment.
‘‘I’m going to be old myself someday and someone will have to help me out,’’ Mr Janner said.
Mr Janner also volunteers as a bus driver for the Heathcote Health’s planned activity group.
Heathcote Health chief executive Dan Douglass said the Meals on Wheels service was provided under an agreement with the City of Greater Bendigo.
‘‘(It) enables older frail people to remain in their own homes as long as possible and also supports people in the short term after discharge from hospital,’’ he said.
‘‘Heathcote Health owes a great debt to our many Meals on Wheels volunteers, past and present, for supporting this very valuable service.’’
Heathcote Health volunteer co-ordinator Linda Barrow said Meals on Wheels provided more than just a nutritious meal.
‘‘It’s also a time for friends to catch up,’’ she said.
‘‘Both volunteers and recipients
‘‘It only takes around an hour to make the deliveries but the benefits for the volunteers and the recipients are on-going.’’
There has been a Meals on Wheels service in Heathcote since 1980 and there is always a need for more volunteers.
Community members who are interested in helping should either pick up a Volunteer Application Pack from the hospital administration/front office, or contact Linda Barrow on 5431 0900.
