Electronic speed signs installed

Axedale Primary School students will now be a little safer crossing the road with the installation of new electronic variable speed limit signs last week.

By Nikala Dixon

Victorian Roads Minister Terry Mulder said the $150,000 project involved replacing painted metal school zone signage with electronic signs on the McIvor Hwy.

‘‘Axedale Primary School is located on a busy two lane, two-way highway. To ensure the safety of children in the school’s vicinity, a school zone is in place which requires motorists to reduce their speed from 60km/h to 40km/h during set times,’’ Mr Mulder said.

Axedale Primary School principal Lex Johnstone said the school was pleased the speed signs had finally been installed.

‘‘The school and community have been working on this for a number of years.

‘‘They’re already having a noticeable effect on the traffic when we’re coming and going in the mornings and afternoons,’’ he said.

Mr Johnstone said a traffic survey was initiated by the community some time ago and, after assessments by VicRoads and Campaspe Shire, the community was officially informed that the signs had been approved.

Member for Northern Victoria Damian Drum said the installation of electronic variable speed limit signs would better alert motorists to the change in speed limit, improving the safety of the area for children attending school and other pedestrians.

‘‘The Coalition Government is committed to improving pedestrian safety and driving down the road toll across the state,’’ he said.

The works were carried out during school holidays to minimise disruption to traffic and the school community.
