Disappointing end to Heathcote's pennant season
The bowls pennant season ended for Heathcote with division three and division six missing the finals.
It is many years since Heathcote has not had at least one team in the finals.
After a good effort last week against top team Harcourt, losing by five shots, division three played second bottom team Strathfieldsaye.
Unfortunately, Heathcote was given a bowls lesson, and lost by 44 shots to finish on the bottom of the ladder.
Division six had a good win against top team Calivil, but finished fifth, only six points out of the four.
In division three, Greg Speirs’ team made a good start, winning the first two ends, but then struggled, down by 13 shots after 12 ends.
The team lifted but the lead was too big and it went down by 10 shots.
Deryl Binney’s team had even start, with scores level after nine ends.
The team only won three more ends and was soundly defeated by 30 shots.
John McGillivray’s team made a good start and led by seven shots by the 10th end.
The team kept up the pressure, winning four of the last five ends to win by eight shots.
Bill Gardiner’s team had a poor start, losing the first seven ends, but fought back to trail by only two shots after 12 ends.
The team only won five more ends and lost by 12 shots.
Results: division three 76 lost to Strathfieldsaye 120 (Greg Speirs 17 lost to A Morris 27; Deryl Binney 15 lost to R Brittern 45; John McGillivray 29 d G Etherton 21; Bill Gardiner 15 lost to G Sargeant 27).
In division six, Neville Smith’s team won the first three ends and, by the 10th end, led by five shots.
The team then took control and won the last three ends to win by 12 shots.
Ernie Chapman’s team had an even game, with scores level on the eighth, 10th, 13th, 16th and 20th ends.
Despite winning the last two ends, the team went down by one shot.
Ray Anderson’s team made a flying start, winning the first four ends to lead by 12 shots by the 11th end.
The team then struggled, but held on to win five more ends and recorded a four-shot win.
Keith Brown’s team won the first three ends and led by five shot after 13 ends.
The team won the next nine ends and, despite losing the last three ends, went on to have a big 18-shot win.
Results: division six 108 d Calivil 75 (Neville Smith 31 d B May 19; Ernie Chapman 17 lost to J Pickles 18; Ray Anderson 23 d A Leech 19; Keith Brown 37 d B Ralphs 19).
Social bowls on Wednesday was played in hot and humid conditions, with 17 players enjoying three games of bowls.
At the end of play, two teams were on equal wins and the shots up could not split the teams, so joint winners were declared.
The two winning teams were Laurie Conforti (s) and Chris Cail (two wins, 34 points, +15 shots) and Smokey Dawson (s), D Cutajar and Russell Gray (two wins, 34 points, +15 shots).
Runners-up were Ellis Knight (s) and Lorraine Speirs (two wins, 34 points, +10 shots).
Mixed social bowls will be played on Wednesdays and Saturdays at 1pm until pennant season starts.
On Saturday, the Heathcote Bowling Club best pennant player vote count was held.
In the women’s section, Dot Cutajar was the winner with seven votes, ahead of Heather Baker with five votes.
Third place was joint with Judy McDonald, Eileen O’Brien, Chris Smith and Judy Chapman all finishing with four votes.
In the men’s division, Greg Speirs was the winner with 10 votes.
Runner-up was Bill Gardiner with nine votes, ahead of Russell Gray and Tom Aylett with five votes each.
The club congratulates Cutajar and Speirs on their wins to complete a good season of bowling by each.
