Crowds flock to raceway
Heathcote Park Raceway once again hosted a big crowd of car enthusiasts for the Nostalgic Drags on Saturday.
By Nikala DixonThe town was treated to a parade of classic old cars, modified for drag racing, on their way to the raceway on Friday night and Saturday morning, including one classic old Ford that was still the family sedan, complete with baby seat in the back.
It seems Holden Kingswood owners have quite a sense of humour, with a canary yellow Kingswood causing a storm with a cheeky graphic painted across the rear, ‘Sponsored by Centrelink’.
‘‘It was old school on steroids,’’ Heathcote resident Mick Lumsden said.
‘‘It was the first time my son had been to a quarter mile and he loved it.
‘‘For a father to take his son to something so different and watch the smile on his face, well it was priceless. And it was great for him to see some women drivers. Gives him a more level perspective.’’
Axedale police also made an appearance at the raceway and though the crowd might have loved to see the police car test its mettle on the track, Senior Constable Laurie Mueck said he doubted the district police car would have recorded spectacular lap times.
‘‘It’s a four-wheel drive. It probably would have taken it a week,’’ Sen. Constable Mueck laughed.
The next event at the raceway is the Full On Test and Tune on February 11, which will also feature the Young Guns Burnout Series.
Gates open at 8.30am with racing in the Test and Tune starting at 11am, while the Young Guns Burnout series runs from 5pm until late.
