Court House Crafts has celebrated its 20th birthday, providing a place for talented district residents to show their creations.
Court House Crafts celebrated its 20th birthday this month.
The McIvor Cottage Industry Co-operative was formed in 1993 and has grown to fill the old Heathcote court house with goods made by talented district residents; as well as craft supplies, such as patchwork fabric and wool, and old wares.
Co-op president Rita Stratton said the quality of the work on offer was excellent.
‘‘And if you do a craft you need an outlet for it,’’ she said.
She said the wide range of merchandise helped keep the shop going.
‘‘I think that’s why we’re still here,’’ she said.
‘‘If we had just fabric or just wool or just old wares (we wouldn’t have lasted).
‘‘Retail as we know it won’t exist in another 10 years’ time.’’
The co-op has had to cope with a change in passing trade.
‘‘They used to take 58 coaches a week at Moama and once the pokies opened in Melbourne they went down to four in a month,’’ Mrs Stratton said.
‘‘And even if you only got a couple off a coach that bought something, it still made a difference.
‘‘But we still get coaches coming in.
‘‘We’re only 4km off the centre of Victoria .
She said the co-op’s continued existence was also due to a dedicated band of women, many of whom had been members since it started.
‘‘Twenty years of service to the community, I think that’s a pretty good effort,’’ she said.
‘‘We’re run entirely by volunteers and we always need more help.’’
