A home found for Heathcote's cricket nets

Heathcote Cricket Club and City of Greater Bendigo have decided on the possible position of the new cricket nets.

By Nikala Dixon

Heathcote Cricket Club president Ron Sheppard said after much discussion it was likely the new nets would be put where the old nets were, behind the angling club rooms at Barrack Reserve.

‘‘They’ll probably stay where they are,’’ Sheppard said.

‘‘There’s not really anywhere else to put them and they’ve stood the test of time. The damage caused by the floods was a one-off thing and for $92,000 they’re going to be pretty good nets.’’

The club is preparing for the annual cricket big bash at Barrack Reserve on February 19, but the club has thrown a bouncer at district police, who have yet to register a team this year for the event.

‘‘I think they must be a bit intimidated,’’ Sheppard said.

‘‘Mary (Dent) from the Commercial has entered a team again this year and I think they gave them a flogging last year. Maybe they don’t want to be beaten by a girl.’’

Sheppard said the club was delighted to have received a $2000 donation from the Hindsight Club, a Bendigo fundraising group, which includes Mark Segafedo from Segafredo’s Bakery in Heathcote and former Heathcote resident Brendan Baker.

‘‘We’re still looking for more prizes for the heart starter raffle though,’’ Mr Sheppard said.

The raffle will be drawn at the big bash event. Anyone with prizes needs to contact club secretary Di Sheppard on 0417380927.
