Merran new to the Berrigan shire

Coming from a strong tourism background, Merran Socha (pictured) seemed the ideal fit to fill the Berrigan Shire’s economic development officer role.

Mrs Socha taking up the role just over a month ago, replacing Phil Nunn.

Mrs Socha’s role as economic development officer intertwines both tourism and economic development roles.

And projects for the aged care sector in Finley and the Intermodal in Tocumwal are high on her list.

‘‘I am looking forward to expanding the horizon,’’ she said.

‘‘There is so much more to do.

‘‘I also don’t think we have really looked at what we can do for the farming industry.

‘‘Council has got a really good economic document which recognises the value of tourism.’’

Mrs Socha, who was previously executive officer of Sun Country on the Murray for 13 years, is looking forward to her new position.

Before her time at Sun Country, Mrs Socha had worked in other tourism and promotion roles.

‘‘I spent time at Coffs Harbour as the Visitor Information Centre manager, and before that I had spent five years in Vail, Colorado.

‘‘It is the total tourism destination. I spent time in a tourism, volunteer training and property management role.

‘‘I guess I probably just fell into it (tourism) living in Colorado.

‘‘I am very passionate about the industry and understand visitor economy and the need for any community for new dollars to come in.’’
