Jerilderie Printery open to the public

A key part of the living history of the Ned Kelly legend will be accessible to the public this Saturday as part of the biennial Jerilderie Letter Event. The restored Jerilderie Printery will be officially opened as part of the festivities.

A key part of the living history of the Ned Kelly legend will be accessible to the public this Saturday as part of the biennial Jerilderie Letter Event.

The restored Jerilderie Printery will be officially opened as part of the festivities.

The restoration of the printery, which is located next to the library, was funded by a heritage grant provided to Jerilderie Shire Council in 2011.

Infamous bushranger Ned Kelly attempted to have the now famous Jerilderie Letter published at the site in 1879 to share his manifesto and demonstrate the injustice he felt he and his family had suffered.

The building has had several occupants and uses, including a chemist, from circa 1890 until the 1930s. The printery then became part of the adjoining residence, ‘Banksi’.

In 2008 the Jerilderie Council purchased Banksi in order to save the printery and provide a site for the central library.

The printery will host the ‘Doing the Bolt’ Exhibition, which opens from 11am tomorrow. It will include an extensive collection of exact replicas and original items relating to the Australian convicts and bushrangers.

The printery comprises two buildings, the main building with three rooms, kitchen and cellar.

The printery is one of six buildings still standing which played an important role in the Kelly Gang’s raid on the town in 1879.

The commemorated Jerilderie Letter is one of only two original documents by Ned Kelly known to have survived.

The Jerilderie Letter is exhibited at the State Library of Victoria, along with Ned Kelly’s armour.
