It was by chance that Berrigan’s Nelva Cameron (pictured) took up a position with Gerard K McCarthy – which at the time was owned by Len Abbott – in 1973.By Hannah Nichols
The choice all those years ago has resulted in Ms Cameron celebrating her 40th anniversary working with the practice this month.
‘‘I received a phone call from Bill Abbott asking if I was interested in the position and I told him ‘not really’,’’ she said.
‘‘Eventually though, I said that I would come in until he found somebody else to fill the vacant position.’’
Ms Cameron is still waiting to be relieved, 40 years later.
‘‘I have held the same role, and over the years taken on more responsibility.
‘‘When I started I was Bill Abbott’s secretary and have advanced to legal clerk, and in 1979 became a Justice of the Peace.’’
During her 40 years, Ms Cameron said she has seen a vast change in technology.
It was after the change from typewriters to computers that Ms Cameron contemplated leaving, thinking she may struggle to adapt.
‘‘When I first came we used typewriters and a dictator that used vinyls.
‘‘I used to be much more careful of spelling mistakes back then, but it is much easier with computers.’’
Even after reluctantly coming to the role 40 years ago, Ms Cameron said there is no talk of retirement in the near future.
‘‘I am still here and I love the work.
‘‘We currently have and have had terrific staff, and we all have a really good relationship.
‘‘Gerard is a great boss to work for.’’
On Friday, August 2 the staff took Ms Cameron to lunch to congratulate her on such a fantastic achievement.
As a thank you gift she was presented with a lovely brooch, ruby glass and flowers.
