Ian Sneddon has shown an impressive commitment and love for the community of Jerilderie over many years.
It is for this reason he was recognised as the 2012 Jerilderie Shire Citizen of the Year.
His involvement in the community as a volunteer spans many years and many different organisations.
Mr Sneddon’s contributions and involvements include his past and continued involvement with the Jerilderie Golf Club.
He held the position of president for many years, as well as coaching and assisting junior players, and more recently for lady golfers.
He has always shown a strong commitment to the Rural Fire Service and has been involved in one brigade or another since moving to Jerilderie in 1980.
As well as being a great ambassador for tourism and town development, Mr Sneddon is also a hands on person in keeping the town beautiful as a member of Tidy Towns and president of the committee since 2006.
This committee has been successful with many projects, but most recently their Bush Tucker Trail that you can explore along Horgan Walk at Luke Park. It was was ‘highly commended’ at last year’s Keep Australia Beautiful Awards.
Mr Sneddon has also been instrumental in Jerilderie Legacy matters, organising the Legacy appeal and overseeing the running of the units on Southey St. He is also a valued member of the Jerilderie RSL Sub-branch, selling badges for ANZAC Day and Remembrance Day.
Mr Sneddon has served local government as well — as a councillor for 13 years where he undertook the roles of mayor and deputy.
During his time on council he showed great leadership and a dedication and commitment to the town, and in particular oversaw much advancement in tourism.
Jerilderie Shire Mayor Terry Hogan, Young Citizen of the Year Emily Raleigh, Sportsperson of the Year Lachlan Leeds, Citizen of the Year Ian Sneddon, Little Aussie award winners Zoe Holcombe and Jacky Wu, and Deputy Mayor Ruth McRae.
