Tocumwal Aerodrome was a hive of activity over the weekend with 15 aircraft landing.By Hannah Nichols
They included a collection of Chipmunks planes that joined in the Antique Aeroplane Association of Australia Chipmunk rally.
AAAA president Mark Henderson said Tocumwal provided a fantastic venue for the rally.
‘‘We come reasonably regularly to Tocumwal,’’ he said.
Mr Henderson said the AAAA regarded Tocumwal and its facilities highly and would like to open an avenue to hold the rally in the community biannually.
‘‘We have probably in the order of 40 or 50 people who have flown in from all over.
‘‘The Association holds a number of events and the focus of this event is the (historic) Chipmunk.’’
Among those to attend the rally with his precious Chipmunk was Melbourne’s Roger Miller who houses his plane in Tocumwal.
Mr Miller’s Chipmunk was purpose built in 1951 and when he purchased the plane it was in dire need of refurbishment.
‘‘The plane has been completely re-done.
‘‘When I purchased it, it was painted in commercial colours – red and white.’’
Now the plane has been beautifully restored to near original condition.
‘‘I bought the plane here to Tim Becroft, who brought it up to the condition it is in now.’’
Mr Miller, a retired airline pilot, said his Chipmunk was an absolute delight to fly.
And his fascination with the historic plane traces back to his early flying days.
‘‘It is a reasonably safe plane.
‘‘I learnt to fly them as a 17 year-old kid.’’
