The Jerilderie Demons have claimed the Picola North West premiership flag.
Jerilderie confirmed its standing as the most successful club since the Picola league split into two divisions in 2009 by claiming its third flag in five years on Saturday.
It took a come-from-behind effort from the Josh Bode-led Demons as they slotted seven last-quarter goals to secure an emphatic 42-point victory over Strathmerton and, more importantly, back-to-back premierships.
Hundreds of Demons fans made the trip to Memorial Park in Deniliquin for the decider, many there to see how many majors double-ton goalkicker Aaron Purcell could manage.
But the man mountain had a quiet afternoon, slotting just one six-pointer for the day to take his season tally to a colossal 222, with teammate Tom Bryce proving an unlikely hero with four important grand final goals.
Key onballer Nick Keating was given the best-on-ground medal for a starring role in the midfield, while playing-coach Bode and last year’s Pearce medallist Chris Marshall were also important through the centre corridor.
‘‘If you’d told me before the game that Azza (Purcell) would kick one goal, I’d say we would lose,’’ Bode said post-match.
‘‘But the other blokes stepped up and we had a good game.’’
Final score: Jerilderie 18.10 (118) defeated Strathmerton 11.10 (76).
