It was fifth time lucky for the Berrigan Sports mid-week ladies’ pennant team when they won the Murray Bowls Division 2 pennant championship for 2011-12 on Friday.
After playing Numurkah four times during the season and coming up short each time, the Berrigan ladies finally got over the line when it counted – in the grand final.
In what was a tight contest early, Berrigan Sports ended up running out convincing winners 83-56.
Rink scores: Faye Gibbs, Elaine Hawkins, Kura Goldsmith and Irene Whelan 32-11; Val Chisholm, Marg Pola, Jill Loats and Lesley Fankhauser 31-20; Glenys McKay, Mary Curtin, Clare Harvey and Katie Vandermeer 20-25.
The victory was well celebrated, including – rumour has it – a wedding!
The result was a fitting one for a team that consistently improved as the season went on and peaked at just the right time.
The mid-week ladies have a big challenge in front of them next season in Division 1 but if they maintain the standard shown this season they should be competitive.
In Saturday pennant, the Division 2 team had a consolation victory defeating the bottom-placed Numurkah team 116-103 (13-0).
It was a tough and tight contest across all rinks and only a late surge by Berrigan Sports saw them sneak over the line for the win.
Skipper and rink scores: Rick Bradbury 23-17, Graeme McKay 30-27, Mick Bush 37-33 (picking up five shots on the last end) and Graeme Clements 26-26 (recovering from a 14-0 deficit after the first six ends).
The highlight of the day was Mick Bush, Dennis Bush, David Reynoldson and Neville Burke picking up 8 shots on the third end.
The Division 4 team were defeated by a strong Cobram team 89-61 (10-2) — Jill Loats 9-41, Val Chisholm 30-19 and Merv Fennell 22-29.
Both Saturday pennant teams missed out on a place in the final and must now look forward to an improved performance in 2012-13.
The final of the Men’s Club triples was played on Sunday with Darron Fruend, Harry Kofoed and Matt Hansen winning 19-16 in a closely fought match against Mark Rooney, Peter Blake and Rob Beard.
