Barooga too strong for Combine

The Dawmac Combine were comprehensively defeated by a strong Barooga outfit on Sunday afternoon, conceding an outright victory in Murray Valley Cricket Association’s premier grade.

The Dawmac Combine were comprehensively defeated by a strong Barooga outfit on Sunday afternoon, conceding an outright victory in Murray Valley Cricket Association’s premier grade.

Resuming at 5/124 Barooga quickly decided to go for broke with Daniel Davis (40) only adding a handful of runs to his overnight score.

Peter Magill (4/4) continued his good spell as did Chris Shaw (3/29), who removed Imran Arif (60) soon after.

Barooga only added 17 runs in four overs but decided to declare at 7/141.

With the threat of rain in the air the Combine needed to bat well to survive the 76 overs remaining in the day.

Denis Hickey (10) got off to a flyer but when Tom Sinclair (1), Daniel Hickey (2) and then Denis departed, at 3/28, the Combine were in for a tough day.

Daniel Hibberd (41) however tried to defy the Barooga attack.

But Adrian Hickey (2) was out soon after joining Hibberd, and Paul Massingham (19) was able to build a worthwhile partnership with his teammate to help frustrate the Hawks.

Massingham scored three slashing boundaries in his knock, while Hibberd rode his wave of good fortune to compile some needed runs.

At least half-a-dozen chances were squandered by the Hawks off the right-hander, who teased the fielders with close chances.

The pair added 41 before Massingham was caught at deep mid-wicket with the score on 81. This led to a disastrous tail-end collapse as the Hawks took 6/5 including 3/0 to Matthew Jaensch.

The Combine were all out for 86. It left Barooga nine runs to win outright, which they achieved, but not before Magill (1/7) claimed yet another wicket.

The Combine travel to Nathalia for their final game of the home-and-away season on Saturday and Sunday.

Division 1

The Dawmac Division 1 Combine were also defeated by Barooga on Saturday in a disappointing outing.

Resuming at 0/11 chasing 271, the Combine, without run machine Russell Anderson, struggled to chase down the big score.

With a young squad who will no doubt benefit from the experience, the Combine were bowled out for 117 in just 34.3 overs in its first dig.

Sent in for a second innings, the Combine batsmen managed to score 134 before being dismissed seven overs short of the end of the day’s play.

The Combine’s final match of the season sees them host Nathalia at Berrigan commencing Saturday.

Division 2

The Finley Cats celebrated Pink Stump Day with a crushing victory over Katunga on Saturday.

Sporting the McGrath Pink Caps, the Cats won the toss and batted at home in warm conditions.

Tom Isedale (2) was out early but a platform building partnership between Andrew Oddie (18) and Marcus Jackson (85) gave the home side a great advantage.

Jackson was brutal on anything short and quickly got the scoreboard ticking over.

Oddie played second fiddle to the youngster, but was there to guide him through the knock. That was until an untimely injury forced his retirement. Katunga may have seen this as an opening but it wasn’t.

Lindsay Donkin (71 not out) continued to plunder the attack as he and Jackson pushed the score into triple figures with ease.

Jackson clubbed six fours and a six in his knock, but on 85 was caught right on the boundary.

Anthony King (40) joined Donkin and the pair maintained the onslaught. With the run rate pushing seven an over, an 85 run partnership between the two ensured a massive score.

King departed followed by Scott Isedale (3) before Lachlan Calder added an unbeaten 29 as the Cats closed on a massive 4/271.

Batting only one short, Katunga looked long odds to get close to the target from the start and that’s how the game panned out.

Quality bowling from Anthony King (3/8) and Kyle Coates (1/20) at the start of the innings set up the victory.

New recruit Pat Cleal (2/11) also showed his potential with a great spell, while Alister Clarke (1/4) and skipper Matt Whitty (2/8) ensured an early finish to the game.

Katunga were all out for just 53 in 22 overs. Finley host Tocumwal in Finley on Saturday.
