Works to expand childcare centre

The Campaspe Community Children's Centre will undergo expansion following an announcement by Campaspe Shire Council.

Campaspe Community Children’s Centre in Echuca will undergo building modification works to increase floor space resulting in additional childcare places being able to be offered at the centre.

Owned and operated by Campaspe Shire, the centre is licensed for 68 children and has a significant waiting list.

Cr Neil Repacholi said council was undertaking the works due to the new education and care services national regulations which come into effect on January 1.

These regulations will mean a decrease in the long day care staff/child ratio for 0-3-year-old children, as well as an increase in the allowable floor space per child.

‘‘The net result of these changes would be a reduction in the total number of childcare places at the centre from 68 to 62 and reduced fee income for council of $108,750 at full use over 12 months,’’ Cr Repacholi said.

‘‘However, by removing a wall between two rooms and replacing the existing heaters, the floor space can be increased to allow 73 children to be cared for at the facility.’’
