Three Echuca residents are organising a free Christmas lunch for people who don't want to be alone on December 25.By Jess Craig
Three Echuca residents are hoping to spread the Christmas spirit to those who would otherwise be spending Christmas alone.
Sheridan Clark and Julie Sands, together with Ross Langdon, are organising a free Christmas lunch on December 25 and are extending an invitation to single parents, individuals and ‘lone couples’.
Ms Clark said she became aware of the need for a community lunch through her work with St Luke’s.
‘‘I had a few clients who were coming in last year and I asked them what they were doing for Christmas,’’ she said.
‘‘They were saying ‘nothing, because we don’t have anyone to celebrate with’.
‘‘That’s where the idea came from.’’
The Christmas lunch will be held at the Uniting Church hall on December 25, but with plenty of organising and planning still to do, Ms Clark and Ms Sands are calling for volunteers and donations.
‘‘We think we’ve got enough volunteers for the day, but we’re hoping people will donate a few hours of their time to help us get the hall set up in the lead up,’’ Ms Sands said.
‘‘We’re also calling for donations of Christmas decorations and money
An account has been opened at Bendigo Bank and there are donation tins at various businesses around Echuca and Moama.
‘‘We’ve already had great support from the community and from businesses, so that’s been really wonderful,’’ Ms Clark said.
‘‘We’re anticipating having around 80 people at this year’s lunch and if all goes well, we hope it will grow in the years to come.’’
The Bendigo Bank details are as follows: Account name: Echuca Moama Community Christmas Lunch, BSB: 633108, account number: 150 205 771.
