Town car idea has merit, says mayor

A town car to help transport people from outlying areas into town for medical appointments or to go shopping could work in Echuca, according to Campaspe Shire mayor Ian Maddison.

Campaspe Shire mayor Ian Maddison said he could see the merit in setting up a town car to help transport people from outlying areas to Echuca.

Cr Maddison’s comments follow a driving seminar at Echuca on Sunday last week, aimed at giving elderly drivers the confidence to stay on the road.

Seminar organiser Noel Simmonds raised the idea of a community bus for the elderly, which meant older drivers did not feel as though they were forced to keep driving.

‘‘We have the clubs in Echuca-Moama who run buses so they could drop people at the pokies, why can’t we do the same to allow people to go shopping or for medical appointments,’’ he said.

Cr Maddison said a town car set up in Lockington was successful.

He said similar models could work in other towns.

Cr Maddison said council could support a town car set up, but it would need to be well supported.

Mr Simmonds said Sunday’s forum was a success, with more than 40 people packing Campaspe Regional Library.

Representatives from Campaspe Shire, NSW and Victoria Police spoke at the forum.

Mr Simmonds said he would host another similar forum in the new year.
