Total fire ban in Echuca-Moama and district

Echuca-Moama and district residents are subject to a total fire ban today.

A total fire ban is in place on both sides of the border for Echuca-Moama and district residents today.

In NSW, the RFS has declared a total fire ban day for the Southern Riverina region, which covers the Murray.

In Victoria, the CFA has declared the Northern Country, Mallee and Wimmera districts as total fire ban regions today.

The ban means no fire can be lit in the open air or can remain alight in the open air until midnight tonight.

CFA chief officer Euan Ferguson said north and north-east Victoria was hot and dry.

‘‘The Bureau of Meteorology is also forecasting the likelihood of dry lightning across most of the north of the state, which will increase the chances of fires,’’ he said.

‘‘While conditions are worst in those three districts, this should serve as a warning sign for the rest of the state toothe hot weather is coming and tomorrow’s spike day is a sign of what is to come.

‘‘Now is the time to talk to your family and friends, make your plans and prepare for summer.’’

The Mallee, Wimmera and Northern Country also have a ‘severe’ fire danger rating today while the rest of the state, other than East Gippsland, is ‘very high’.
