Tongala's Kerren Huntley and Andrew Kades recall the day daughter Kaylee was born beside the road on the way to the Echuca hospital.By Ivy Wise
Forced to give birth in the car just minutes from the hospital still has not really sunk in for Tongala couple Kerren Huntley and Andrew Kades.
The young couple were on their way to Echuca hospital on the night of October 10 after Kerren’s waters broke.
They had just passed Echuca racecourse when baby Kaylee decided she could not wait any longer.
‘‘I told Andrew to pull over, as I was having urges to push,’’ Kerren said.
Within seconds, Andrew was by her side while calling the hospital.
‘‘They just kept repeating ‘call an ambulance’, but I knew they wouldn’t be there in time,’’ he said.
‘‘Then I screamed ‘it’s coming now’,’’ Kerren said.
Less than a minute later at 9.44pm, Kaylee was on her mother’s chest while her parents sat in disbelief and sister Talia screamed in the back seat.
‘‘I let out such a scream when Kaylee was coming out, poor Talia burst into tears, so I was trying to comfort her while giving birth to Kaylee,’’ she said.
‘‘It was very scary. I don’t wish for that to happen again.’’
Delivering Kaylee was just as scary, Andrew said.
‘‘I was completely blank. It was scary,’’ he said.
‘‘I was speechless.’’
Having watched Talia being born did not help Andrew either.
‘‘It was so completely different. It was completely new and unfamiliar,’’ he said.
‘‘A lot of it was by feel because it was dark. I got her out and put her on Kerren’s chest to keep her warm.
‘‘She didn’t cry. I was worried about her because I wasn’t sure she was breathing.’’
‘‘Kerren then calmly said ‘I need you to drive me to the hospital’.’’
Hospital staff were waiting for them, as well as Kerren’s mum Annette Evans.
Andrew cut the cord in the car so Kerren and Kaylee could be wheeled in.
‘‘I was in shock and couldn’t stop shaking,’’ Kerren said.
‘‘They said Kaylee was fine, but cold, so I had to warm her up with my body heat.
‘‘Everyone who came in to see me knew my story and congratulated us for doing such a great job.
‘‘The nurses told us babies born like this (fast) are always the strongest.’’
Still in disbelief, Kerren said she was extremely proud of Andrew.
But Andrew said it was Kerren who did all the hard work.
‘‘I felt like I didn’t do anything. It was all Kerren,’’ he said.
Although it was a frightening experience, the couple said they would have a great story to tell their daughter when she was older.
‘‘It certainly was a family event,’’ Kerren said.
