Tomato harvest season begins

District farm manager Neil Geltch said this year his tomatoes were ‘‘looking quite good’’.

By Ruth Clayton

This is in contrast to last year when 115 hectares of his tomatoes were completely wiped out by the January flood.

Tomato harvesting at Geltch Investments for this season began yesterday and will continue until mid-March, when the organisation aims to have harvested 120 tonnes of tomatoes from each of its 180 hectares of tomato crops.

Mr Geltch, who is also co-owner of the business, said although it had been a difficult process, the farm had recovered financially from the flood, thanks to support from buyers Cedenco and grants from Federal and Victorian governments.

Last year, hydroponic tomatoes had to be sourced by Cedenco because of the floods.

This year the weather had been on Mr Geltch’s side.

‘‘Once we get the crop in, we prefer it to not rain at all,’’ Mr Geltch said.

‘‘Anything over an inch (of rain) can be a problem.’’

A tomato harvester is set to begin harvesting at Neil Geltch's tomato farm.
